The History of the CoBRATM Scheme
In December of 2007 Mark David Hatwood approached his council and asked permission to collect batteries on behalf of his community. After six weeks negotiation, Mark was given dispensation by both Cornwall Council and the Environment Agency to do this on a trial basis. As more and more concerned residents heard of Mark's initiative, with support from Cornwall council and SITA Cornwall, Mark then helped other volunteers do the same in their communities around the county, and the CoBRATM Scheme (Community Battery Recycling Alliance) was borne.
Twenty months on, the CoBRATM Scheme to date has helped Cornwall collect over thirty tonnes of batteries and the initiative is still going strong.
We are still looking for willing volunteers who would like to play an active role in their community, so if you feel you'd like to become a pioneer in your area, please contact us.
This is a free service to the public with no strings attached - except the wish to see the toxic contents of batteries recycled responsibly.
Thank you for caring.
